NOSTALGIA

This whole thing is quite nostalgic.

It's everywhere. You could even say we're "suffering" from nostalgia (nostalgia was once considered a mental illness amongst the likes of anxiety and depression)

It is a funny thing, we live in a nostalgic world. I personally am nostalgic for the late '90s and early 2000s, but likely only because that was my childhood and my sole connection to a somewhat different world. Sometimes I am nostalgic for particular times in my life, more recent times. Nostalgia is the whiff of the air of a time, its not what is particular about it but what is general. Nostalgia is how we felt or how we feel we might've felt.

I started thinking about nostalgia as cultural malaise, because it is at the very least a fixation of our times. I thought it a problem, I sought solutions; the solutions were themselves nostalgic. I wanted to be rid of the complexity of the social-visual world, yet it is this world that enables me to do what I am doing. Most conversely; if nostalgia is a problem because it means we are negating the essence of our current time for the myth of another, then the essence of our current time is exactly that negation: To be in this present, this present, is to be partly in the past, and I'm fine with that.

After trying to ease and solve nostalgia, what I saw as another shallow aestheticism, I ended up getting pretty nostalgic. I bought a beautifully ugly brick phone, I listened to the venga-boys and I tried to dress the part a bit too. Truth be told, it didn't really affect my lifestyle that much, but I did learn something important: Technology is and should be a tool. It's testament to my own ignorance, but I did not understand what the internet even was (and I can't be the only one). A mere collection of html files, constructed by code that breaks down to simple building blocks, has mystified many of us; but rather than worrying about getting manipulated or "zucced" and yearning for a time when we didn't have to deal with it, we can just use it to do cool things. The real world is still real, this is just play.
